Fear Free Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide impeccable care to our patients by incorporating tools and strategies to minimize and alleviate fear, anxiety and stress as much as possible. We want our patients to be relaxed and comfortable with veterinary care and, through inspiration and education, our clients to be partners in their health.
What does Fear Free mean?
Fear free means holding each pet’s emotional as well as physical wellbeing in mind at all times. It’s not possible to treat one without the other. We have learned to recognize even subtle signs of fear, anxiety, and stress in pets in our care.
Why our team went Fear Free
We have already been a Cat Friendly Certified practice since 2012. We began to understand even back then that we could make a change in the way we treat our cat patients to help them feel more comfortable and at-ease in the veterinary hospital. When Fear Free began in 2016, it was a natural progression for us to continue this path. Individual certification is the first step for any veterinary professional interested in implementing Fear Free principles in practice. We began becoming certified individuals and realized this was going to be a way of life for us as a whole. We immediately saw a difference in our patient’s emotional well-being, and in our own, the moment we came together.
Practice Certification takes Fear Free implementation to the next level – from an individual to a joint effort that requires the entire practice team to work together to safeguard the emotional wellbeing of their patients, clients and team members. Fear Free Certified® Practices will represent the pinnacle of care in the industry.
Certified Practices will have successfully implemented Fear Free into all aspects of their business. To meet this level of commitment and implementation, practices must measure up to the Fear Free Practice Certification Standards. Once a practice has successfully completed their online self-assessment of the standards, an onsite visit will be scheduled with a Fear Free Practice Certification Veterinarian. The results will be submitted to Fear Free for review and final determination.
What you’ll notice
When you enter our lobby, you’ll notice soft music, lighting, and colors. We play music designed to sooth your pet’s mind, and our lighting and wall colors help invoke a sense of calm. You will be taken directly into a room where toys and treats abound! We will treat your pet on the floor, in your lap, even outside, if that helps alleviate stress in your pet. Species-specific pheromones fill the exam rooms, reminding your pet of mother’s warmth. Our team moves with purpose in a calm, gentle manner. We talk low and let you know what we are doing every step of the way. We don’t push your pet to do anything they feel is scary or fearful. You are welcome to come to the treatment area with your pet or have us do all treatments in the room with you if your pet does better with you present. If your pet stays here with us, we continue the same techniques of calm, considerate approach and gentle control to prevent fear, anxiety, and stress whenever possible. We love to educate our community about fear free and have handouts and tips to help you get your pet to the vet.
